Food Wars: Frozen Fruits and Veggies vs. Fresh

As we all know, fruits and veggies are the nutritional driving force of our diet. They are full of fibre, vitamins and mineral plus phytochemicals that will fight off cancer, stroke, heart disease and a lot more health problems. With the best of the harvest flooding grocery stores and markets, it is essential to bear in mind that the more you eat fruits and vegetables, the more you turn on their power! But what will happen if harvest didn’t go well and there are only a few choices in the aisle? Is going to the freezer case and picking up bags of frozen fruits and vegetables an option? Of course it is!
Frozen fruits and veggies give the same health benefits and nutrients as their fresh counterparts. This was confirmed by the Food and Drug Administration or the FDA in 1998.This come as no surprise however, because frozen fruits and vegetables actually, are nothing more than fresh fruits and veggies that were cooked in boiling water for a short time (blanched or steamed) and were frozen almost immediately after being picked. In addition, these frozen fruits and veggies were in their peak in terms of freshness and nutrition when they were processed.
Adding more fruit and vegetables in our diet is the idea. Whether raw, steamed, slice, diced, frozen or fresh. You just got to have more. As a matter of fact, since 2007, the CDC and the Produce for Better Health Foundation has been using the campaign slogan, “Fruits & Veggies — More Matters.”
This message took the place of the old slogan “Five a Day” that was used since the early 90’s. The reason behind this is that 5 helpings of fruits and vegetables in a day are just not sufficient at all. To reap the benefits of fruits and vegetables, an adult will need anywhere from 7 to 13 cups of produce per day. More does really matter.
To sneak more frozen or fresh fruits and veggies in your diet, here are some easy tips.

• Include a lot of fruits and vegetable in your shopping list, be it frozen or dried
• Have fruits on your cereal or add fruits to your breakfast
• Make a fruit bowl of raisins or other dried fruits and put it on your kitchen counter and in the office
• Have a smoothie that was made using frozen fruit s or have fruit for dessert
Any fruits and vegetables are better than none. For good value and the best flavour, fresh vegetables and fruits that are in season are always the ideal choice. However, canned or frozen fruits and veggies minus the added sugar or salt will do just as well.
