Both fresh and canned fruits are very nutritious. However, fruits that are fresh have more fibre than the canned variety. Canned fruits also have added sugar to assist not only in the preservation of the fruits freshness and texture but also to enhance the fruit’s flavour. This is important so that the canned fruits can compete readily with its more costly colleague especially in the off-season months.
Canned fruit has added sugars, if this is not the case, the quality of the fruit in terms of nutrition will be compromised, not only that the fruit’s natural colour will fade and it will have softer texture. People buy canned fruits because it looks presentable, needs little preparation and taste sweet and companies market what people want to buy. Without the added sugars, not one of the criteria will be met.
If you are on a diet that suggests as little added sugar as possible, I would recommend buying fresh fruit.
Fruits from a can will always have lesser amount if fibre than fresh fruit. The reason behind this is that the fruit is peeled before being canned so that it will be preserved for a longer period of time. As fibres are carbohydrates that the body cannot digest, they lower the chances of symptoms that include but aren’t limited to: heart disease, gastrointestinal maladies and diabetes. If you are the kind of person who is at higher risk than the average of getting the diseases mentioned, then choosing fresh fruit is definitely more beneficial for you but it doesn’t mean either that canned fruit will harm you.
If the fruit that you eat is not fresh, much nutritional value is lost, but did you know that canned fruit despite being older in age in general is “fresher” than fresh fruits? Canned fruit after all is harvested when it is at its ripest and shortly thereafter is packaged. In theory, this makes canned fruit fresher than fresh produced. However, fresh fruit in most conditions have more nutritional value because canned fruit is processed.
The next time you go shopping for your fruits looked for the canned fruits that that are preserved in their own juices and water for this is a healthier choice as compared to those canned fruits in corn syrup or high fructose.
Fruit is healthy be it fresh or canned. Which is healthier actually will depend on your dieting needs.
