Jackfruit
Native to the Philippines, Bangladesh, Southwestern India and Sri Lanka, the Jackfruit is one of the largest tree borne fruit on earth. It is a common fruit in Asia and Australia, its juicy pulp around the large seeds has a similar but milder taste to pineapple. Jackfruits are available as sweet chips as well as canned. This fruit is common ingredient for many Asian dishes and the wood of its tree is often used for making different kinds of musical instruments.
Passion Fruit
Although native to South America, the Passion fruit also grows in India, Brazil, and New Zealand. The Passion fruit’s interior is juicy, soft and full of seeds. Commonly, this fruit is found in different juices to boost its flavour. The Passion fruit has 2 types: maracuya, which is the golden one, is like the grapefruit and gulupa, which is the dark purple passion fruit. In terms of size, this fruit is like that of a lemon. You have to be careful of the latter kind because it has been reported to be mildly poisonous.
Rambutan
A native to the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia, the Rambutan fruit is similar to the Lychees. Coming from an evergreen tree, this fruit has a leathery skin that is covered with spines. One of the most famous in Southeast Asia, the Rambutan is a popular Garden fruit tree. This fruit is sweet and juicy fruit and can be commonly found canned or is available in jams.
African Cucumber
From the Kalahari Desert in Africa, the African cucumber can be described best as a horned melon. From its place of origin, the African cucumber is now present in New Zealand and California. The dark green pulp makes one think of bananas, cucumber, limes and passion. Often, this fruit is used for decorating food but you can also get this in sundaes and smoothies.
Star fruit
This fruit is native to Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia. The Star fruit is from a species of tree that has pink flower that is grown even in the US called carambola. This golden yellow fruit is sweet and crunchy and has the taste of pineapples, kiwis and apples combined. Rich in Vitamin C, there are 2 kinds of starfruit – sweet and acidulate.
