Simple Storing Tips for Fresh Fruits

There is a lot of misinformation going around the internet and in magazines about how to store different kinds of fruits. This false information makes storing fresh fruits usually upsetting because usually, they don’t work. Different kinds of fruit should be stored differently and never should be treated the same.

These tips about storing will keep your fresh fruit longer and will save you wasting a lot of produce therefore cutting own your grocery bills.

Bananas

Do not refrigerate bananas if you do, they turn black. The best way to store them is to keep them in a bowl, at room temperature without any other fresh fruit. Bananas will cause other fruits to over-ripe quickly.

Apricots

Refrigerators are the perfect place for storing apricots. Ripe ones will can go for a few days while the unripe apricots will be preserved longer.

Apples

After being picked, apples continue to ripen. If you’re going to store apples for any period of time, put them inside a dry, cool, dark place and make sure that they are not touching each other.

Figs

Until they are ripe, figs can be stored at room temperature.  When they ripen, put them in the fridge and they will last for up to 3 days. All the same, they need to return to room temperature before you serve them because the cold reduces their delicate flavour. 

Cherries

Ripe cherries will be okay in the fridge for a few days.  Just before they are to be eaten, wash them.

Grapefruits

Grapefruits can be stored for up to two weeks if they’re wrapped inside a plastic bag while in the vegetable drawer of the fridge. At room temperature however, you should not keep it for more than 2 days.

Grapes

Grapes can go for about three weeks inside the refrigerator. It still will also be in great condition for up to two weeks in a cool larder with the fruit covered in perforated cling film.

Melons

Cool, airy spot is the perfect storage place for the melons.  A warmer place if the melon is not quite ripe yet is ideal.

Oranges

They can last for 2 weeks in room temperature. For a longer storage time, put in the refrigerator inside perforated plastic bags.

Peaches and Nectarines

Ripe peaches and nectarines will be fine inside the refrigerator while those that are still too firm are best kept at room temperature.

Plums

Plums when unripe are normally kept in warm rooms for a day or two, just until they ripen. When they do, it is best to store them in cool places. They however, will not last for more than 3 days.
